James Cagney is still one of my favorite actors. He defined his method of acting as “plant yourself, look the other fellow in the eye and tell the truth.” His tremendously energetic performances were multidimensional and credible because he practiced what he preached. Also, he had an innate grasp of the subtleties of whatever script he brought to life. Cagney said what he meant and meant what he said.
Voice actors are not exempt from this acting philosophy. We must craft the message to be clearly understood. We must plant ourselves (in front of the mic) look the other fellow in (our mind’s eye), and tell the truth. It sounds so easy, doesn’t it?
